Guests were invited to donate £35 (approx. 51 euros) for a glass of champagne, which automatically entered them into a draw to win a heart shaped diamond worth around £8,000 (approx 11,800 euros)! An impressive firework display was set off over the golf course, drawing a close to the event.
CF Trust
David Seaman became an official patron for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in 2005 and the event was held to raise funds so the charity can continue funding research to improve the symptoms of CF, find an effective treatment and ultimately, a cure.
“The event was a huge success,” he said. “I’m delighted to have raised such a fantastic sum of money for the Trust. Everyone was extremely generous and I’d like to thank everybody involved for all their help and support!” The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK’s only national charity dedicated to all aspects of the disease from funding research, to information, advice and support to families living with Cystic Fibrosis.
Sarah Guthrie, Director of Fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that the event in Portugal has been so successful and enjoyable. The money will be used in our gene therapy work which aims to add a healthy copy of the CF gene to the lungs of those with Cystic Fibrosis. Clinical trials for this work are scheduled to start early in 2008 and we are very optimistic that the results will be successful so that we will be able to change the lives of those living with Cystic Fibrosis”.
Other celebrities to take part in the event included Frank McClintock MBE, Lee Sharpe, Steve Bull MBE, Paul Sampson, Kirsty Gallacher, Anna Walker, Craig Fairbrass, Chris Simmons, Dane Bowers and Bradley Walsh.
