A stork in Silves has been identified as positive for the highly-pathogenic H5N1 sub-type of bird flu. According to reports, the bird has been “transported” to the RIAS recovery centre for wild animals in Olhão, so with luck, its life is being ‘spared’. There have been 16 outbreaks of bird flu detected in other parts of the country recently, all of them in ‘explorations’, like chicken, turkey or duck farms, and in all cases many hundreds of birds have been destroyed. According to Correio da Manhã this morning, the outbreaks in Lisbon, Leiria, Santarém, Beja and Faro have seen 143,000 birds destroyed.
