A Portuguese street juggler who performs in the square outside the old câmara building in Lagos saw red when an Englishman tried to take over his spot to practice his art of standing motionless as a ‘human’ statue.
The encounter soon prompted plenty of action, however, from the ‘statue’ as well as the dexterous opposition. A violent squabble broke out witnessed by a somewhat puzzled crowd, some of whom thought the unexpected incident in the Praça Gil Eanes was an impromptu street drama.
The square is a favourite location for street artists because it attracts a large number of tourists.
Insults, pushing and shoving, and punches were exchanged between the 55-year-old juggler and the 52-year-old human ‘statue’.
It all happened under the stoney gaze of the marble statue of D. Sebastião which stands in the centre of the square and is often the inspiration for street artist human ’statues’.
The squabbling duo were finally separated with the arrival of the police. They were arrested and were due to appear in court this week.
