THERE IS nothing stopping Portugal’s new international airport being sited at Ota from a meteorological point of view, claims a survey carried out in 1999 by water company Aguas de Portugal.
According to the document, OTA suffers from an annual fog and mist incidence rated at 8.7 per cent, sufficiently low enough not to make landings and take offs dangerous given modern radar equipment.
The report not only analysed fog and mist incidence but also annual and monthly rainfall levels.
However Ota was at a disadvantage compared to Portela in Lisbon which has a low annual fog percentage rate of four percent.
When it came to wind force, Ota measured eight per cent, whereas Portela measured 7.5 per cent.
The study is likely to be an important factor when weighing up the two proposed sites at Ota and Rio Frio (Alcochete) which is more similar to the Portela site.
