Summer bans

ITALIAN NEWSPAPERS have dubbed this year’s holiday season the summer of bans, following the issuing of a series of by-laws to enhance public decorum.

These new regulations, which include being fined for public displays of affection in Eboli and a ban on building sandcastles in Eraclea, near Venice, came about after a government decree gave mayors extra law-and-order powers in a nationwide crackdown on crime.

Rodrigo Piccoli, 33, called a national radio station to protest after he was fined 50 euros for lying down in a park in the northern city of Vicenza to read a book. The mayor has since promised to drop the ban.
