Trade unionists storm Parliamentary meeting

Angry scenes took place again in parliament on December 13 when Secretary of State for Public Administration Hélder Rosalino delivered his speech on the new labour law. Trade unionists heckled from the public galleries, chanting “liar, liar!” and waving banners with the word “no”. Rosalino interrupted his speech as police escorted the protesters outside.

The law in question – which comes into effect next year – involves increasing civil servants’ work hours from 35 to 40 per week, and a controversial contract termination agreement proposed by the government.
