A FRENCH doctor who posed as a plastic surgeon and carried out illegal operations in a derelict clinic in the city of Marseille has been sentenced to three years in prison on Monday.
During the trial, which started in June, it was revealed that Michel Maure lured hundreds of patients to the premises between 2002 and 2004 to carry out painful and unhygienic operations.
Although a qualified doctor, Michel Maure, who dubbed himself “one of the greatest surgeons in the world,” was not a plastic surgeon and was struck off the list of recognised French doctors in 2007.
Michel Maure was sentenced to pay a 75,000 euro fine and compensate his victims, 100 of whom had complained of disfigurement and permanent damage to their health.
While the court prepared its ruling, Michel Maure went on the run, but was caught on a luxury yacht in Spain and is expected to be taken back to France.
