Unpaid workers surround boss’ home

It’s a siege that has been ongoing for almost two weeks in Setúbal. Angry workers who say they have not been paid for solar panel installation work done in France have taken to surrounding the home and business of their former employer, demanding anything from €900 to €3,500 each. Diário de Notícias (DN) reports that the man has appealed to local police for help and says he doesn’t have the money to pay.

According to the newspaper, the debts – owed to as many as 300 workers – piled up after a job in Southern France went pear-shaped. The men claim they were put up in poor accommodation, sometimes five to a room, and paid less than €10 a day.

DN says the workers complain that they returned to Portugal the poorer and are now all struggling to survive.
