Wheelchair protest

JOSÉ LEONÊS Lima, a 52 year old disabled man, will be crossing Portugal in his wheelchair, from Viana do Castelo (northern Portugal) to Faro.

His main objective is to protest against the fact that thousands of disabled people remain unemployed and, he says, discriminated against in this country.

The 731 kilometre journey will start on August 1 and is scheduled to end on August 21.

Jose Lima, who has 80 per cent invalidity, is registered as unemployed and has been turned down for many jobs that he believes he is capable of doing.

He said: “Even though disabled people don’t have the same rights, they are made to carry out all of the duties that this unequal society dictates.”
