Zoo saves lost birds

Birds of prey often get lost during their autumn migration in the western Algarve region – but Lagos Zoo is now coming to their aid.

In the operation, which aims to collect and re-locate migratory birds to safe places, Lagos Zoo is asking anyone who comes across a lost bird to contact them and inform them of the bird’s whereabouts.

The zoo will then pick up the bird, ensure that they are in optimal health and pass them over to the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forestry (ICNF) for further care.

So far, the project has seen two griffon vultures, which were suffering from exhaustion and required rehabilitation, recovered by the zoo.

Griffon vultures often travel with many juveniles resulting in the younger birds getting tired, lagging behind and being unable to keep up with the main flock.

At this time of year, particularly in November, many birds migrate from Northern Europe to warmer climates such as North Africa.
