13 arrested in “one of Alentejo’s largest drug busts in years”

“This is one of the largest seizures in recent years, not just for the PSP, but for the entire Alentejo region”

Police in Évora have pulled off one of the biggest drugs busts the Alentejo has seen in years, dismantling a well-organised drug ring and seizing a massive haul of drugs, firearms and luxury goods.

Between Monday and Wednesday, authorities arrested 13 people – nine men and four women aged between 19 and 45 – and confiscated over 135,000 doses of hashish, along with 697 of cocaine, over 85 of ecstasy and nearly €60,000 in cash.

The bust also netted five high-powered cars and a motorbike, two nitrous oxide canisters, several firearms and bladed weapons, over 130 rounds of ammunition, and suspected drug money assets.

“This is one of the largest seizures in recent years, not just for the PSP, but for the entire Alentejo region,” said PSP subcommissioner Nuno Albardeiro, speaking at a press conference on Friday.

The operation came after a year and a half of investigation, kicking off with the red-handed arrest of four suspects in Évora, along with the seizure of part of the drug haul. That same day, police executed 29 search warrants, leading to the capture of the rest of the group and the bulk of the drugs.

According to authorities, the network was a “highly structured organisation” rooted in Évora and Montemor-o-Novo, with links reaching Lisbon and Samora Correia. The group reportedly moved large quantities of drugs into the central Alentejo.

Of the 13 suspects arrested, five are now in preventive custody.
