A woman’s touch

ISILDA GOMES is the new Civil Governor for the Faro district. The handover ceremony was due to take place in Lisbon on Wednesday, June 6, presided by the Minister of Internal Administration, Rui Pereira.

Isilda Gomes replaces António Pina who left the office to run as a candidate for the presidency of the Regional Tourism Board (RTA). At the time of going to press, António Pina, as the only candidate running in the RTA elections, was expected to be elected president of the Regional Tourism Board on Tuesday, June 5.

The new representative of the Portuguese government in the Algarve, the first woman to take the job in the region, was born in 1951 in Almeida, a city located in the north of Portugal, near Serra da Estrela. She has a Mathematics and Natural Science university degree and a special master degree on drugs prevention from Lisbon Medical University.

Isilda Gomes was vice-president at the Portimão Câmara between 2001 and 2005. During this period, she was responsible for several departments, such as education, culture, sport, social services, youth and health.

Isilda Gomes was involved in numerous local projects involving young people and active drugs prevention on an educational level.
