A22 highway traffic continues to fall

The first half of 2013 shows that daily traffic on the A22 highway continues to fall.

Statistics provided by the CCDR Algarve (commission for coordination and regional development) show that average daily traffic fell 10.4% during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2012.

Translated into real numbers, this means a daily average of 5,079 vehicles use the highway.

The CCDR stresses that the figures hide an alarming truth. They say the 10.4% drop may seem tame compared to previous decreases, but data shows that since 2008 traffic has fallen on the highway by 67.3%.

A 9.3% drop in traffic was also registered on the Almodôvar-Messines section of the A2 highway during the first half of this year. The average daily traffic there was 4,590 vehicles.

In this case, CCDR Algarve stresses that although the drop is significant, it is nothing like the one suffered on the A22, where drivers have been opting for the EN125 in droves since the government implemented the toll system in 2011.
