Dear Editor, I reply to the article in the Algarve Resident about animals being regarded by law in Portugal as “things”.
I am so pleased that this issue is being contested. Many in Portugal treat their animals with love and give good care, but some do not and these people would treat animals with more respect if they were punished by the law for cruel treatment.
I am appalled that animals should be considered to be mere things by this government, when they are living, feeling and loving beings.
After all, us humans are only human animals. At the top of the food chain maybe, so superior, but that should make us take responsibility for our fellow creatures.
I do so hope that this law is passed, and soon. Why is this judgement taking so long? It seems like just an excuse to do NOTHING.
