A PROJECT to build a hotel in the grounds of Faro airport to cater for airport staff and passengers is being considered.
According to Faro airport’s director, António Correia Mendes, the hotel is likely to be a three or four star establishment.
A date for construction has not yet been set, however it is estimated to take 18 months to build. Faro’s airport hotel will be the second of its kind in Portugal, with Porto already working on an identical project, which is due to be completed first.
Another project which is in the pipeline for Faro airport is the construction of a retail park or business centre, although nothing has been firmly decided yet, according to António Correia Mendes. “We are looking at various options with the aim of making a profit from land that is available,” he said, adding that plans for the enlargement of the airport are also being discussed.
An environmental impact study is being carried out before any of these plans can be put into action because the airport is located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Rede Natura 2000, both environmentally sensitive areas.
“We want to give this study to the Portuguese environmental agency by the middle of July so that the project can be viewed by the public,” said António Correia Mendes.
