Two GNR police officers were caught up in a violent bar brawl in Albufeira in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The pair had been called to a disturbance outside a bar on Avenida Sá Carneiro. Two drinkers were refusing to leave, and took no notice of the police attempts to diffuse the situation.
Things went from bad to worse, and witnesses told Correio da Manhã newspaper how the officers ended up on the ground, with rips to their uniforms.
A call for back-up brought matters to a close and now the two drinkers in question will be heard in court.
Avenida Sá Carneiro is one of the most notorious areas for violence among late-night revellers and has extra police patrols during the high season.
