Algarve beaches have best levels quality of water

ALBUFEIRA AND Vila do Bispo have been named as the regions which have the most number of beaches with a high quality of water, according to a survey carried out throughout the whole of Portugal.

Quercus, the national association for nature conservation, has created a system called ‘Praias de Ouro’ and, with the co-operation of Instituto de Portugal, measured the water quality of over 500 beaches in Portugal between 2002 and 2006.

Fifteen beaches in Albufeira achieved gold status followed by Vila do Bispo in second place with 10.

Despite this good news, there were two Algarve beaches that registered poor results: Praia dos Alemães in Albufeira and Praia do Carvoeiro in Lagoa both scored consistently bad and deteriorating levels of water quality.
