Algarve lures tourists at national tourism fairs

In a bid to ensure the Algarve remains “the top holiday destination” for the domestic market, the region’s tourism board (RTA) is taking part in three national fairs in March.

The first will be Lisbon’s BTL tourism fair (February 28 to March 4). It is described as the country’s biggest tourism fair, promoting the best that Portugal has to offer to holidaymakers. The RTA stand covers 702sqm and has been designed to depict the Algarve’s iconic cliffs and caves.

The tourism board is also taking part in ‘Desafios da Água’ (March 1-2), a conference organised by regional water authority Águas do Algarve to discuss the importance of managing water efficiently.

RTA’s presence at the event, being held at Herdade dos Salgados in Albufeira, is to show that it is aware of the importance of saving water “at a time that the risk of water shortages is imminent in many parts of the country”, says Algarve tourism boss Desidério Silva.

Lisbon’s Mundo Abreu 2018 fair (March 10-11) will be the next stop for the Algarve tourism board. The event is said to be the biggest national fair for early booking offers.

“The Algarve is still the favourite destination for summer holidays in Portugal,” said Desidério Silva.

“National tourists are attracted by the beauty of our beaches, the gastronomy, the stunning landscapes, the excellent hotels and quality events,” he said, adding that taking part in these fairs is a way of ensuring tourist numbers continue to grow in the region.
