Aljezur celebrates as EN120 road repairs begin

€737,000 renovations move forward on the closed EN120 road

After months of calls for action from the local council, the damaged stretch of the EN120 national road in Odeceixe, Aljezur is finally set to be repaired. On Friday, August 29, the official contract was signed, marking the start of works that promise to restore one of Aljezur’s most important roads within the next three months.

Since March, locals in Odeceixe and across the municipality of Aljezur have lived with the daily headache of the EN120 road closure, caused by storms and the effects of last year’s wildfire which left it on the brink of collapse. Detours, long waits, and a general sense of frustration have marked the summer, leaving many residents wondering when the situation would finally be resolved.

The intervention, managed by national infrastructure authority Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) and carried out by Construções J.J.R. & Filhos, S.A., is expected to take 90 days to complete, at a total cost of just over €737,000. The engineering project was designed by Tetraplano – Engenharia, Lda. If all goes according to plan, the road will be fully operational before the year is out.

Aljezur mayor José Gonçalves expressed relief over the start of the repairs.

“We are convinced the work will progress smoothly and within the defined deadlines, allowing circulation on the EN120 to be restored soon. As always, we will continue to collaborate constructively, but also demand solutions that guarantee the safety and quality of our infrastructure in the future,” he said in a council statement.

The local authority also thanked its people for their patience during this time: “We thank all the residents of the municipality, and especially those of Odeceixe, for the understanding, resilience, and sense of responsibility shown during this period.”
