THOUSANDS OF people converged on Quarteira on Friday to watch a midnight fireworks display that signalled the end of the first summer of the Allgarve project.
Allgarve, a programme of entertainment events in the region, is supported by the Portuguese government and local councils who want to promote the area as having more to offer visitors than simply beaches and golf courses.
The entertainment events were planned with a view to attracting tourists with higher spending powers.
During this first year, the Loulé district had several national and international artists including Lila Downs, Bryan Ferry, Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau, Elvis Costello, Lloyd Cole and Kátia Guerreiro.
As well as concerts and shows, the Allgarve events in Loulé included an exhibition entitled Livre Circulação: Serralves no Algarve, which was inaugurated by António Pina, the Minister of Economy at the Convento de Santo António in Loulé. This exhibition will continue until September 30.
