An exciting summer

THE SUMMER promises to be full of exciting events across the Algarve.

Tavira Câmara, in collaboration with a number of private and public groups, is organising its Summer in Tavira programme during July, August and September.

The Algarve Orchestra opened the series of events at the Praça da República on Saturday, June 30, and a special exhibition entitled Transfert celebrating 50 years of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, is ongoing at the Palácio da Galeria until September 8. There will be guided tours in English and Portuguese on July 21 and August 4 and 25.

From July 14 to September 8 the medieval pavilion hosts an exhibition by the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architecture, showing examples of Portuguese architecture from the past 30 years.

The first in a series of initiatives about science in Tavira is being supported by the Ministry of Science and the National Agency for Scientific Culture and Technology are to be presented by António Jorge Gonçalves and include guided tours to the Phoenician Archaeological Station, about construction technology.

The Casa das Artes de Tavira will be holding exhibitions by Nada Mandelbaum, Miguel Martinho, Macedo Rodrigues, Inês Winjorst, Ana Vieira and São Trindade as well as a collective exhibition Sal da Terra by Paulo Tuna, Huge Trindade, Carlos Trindade and Lara Portela.

In the first two weeks of July, an arts and theatre festival is taking place throughout the streets of Tavira, featuring companies from various countries.

The Fábrica Balsense and the Convento do Carmo are hosting musical concerts by Mariza on August 4, Cristina Branco on August 8, Mind da Gap on August 12, Carlos Barretto/ In Loko and the Algarve Orchestra on September 15.

Portimão alive

Portimão hosts a number of international dance companies, circus and musicians who will be performing over the next few months.

The Madrid Flamenco Ballet performs at the Municipal Auditorium on July 8, followed by the Chilean Folklore Ballet on August 14. The Shanghai New Circus will be performing on July 13 at the Portimão Arena, followed, on August 17, by Dancing Queen Abba Greatest Hits.

The cycle of musical entertainment ends on September 1 with the Bulgarian Dream Dancers performing at the Municipal Auditorium.

All of the Portimão events begin at 10pm and cost between 10 and 15 euros (Auditorium) and 15 and 20 euros (Arena).
