FOLLOWING the signing of contracts last month, a public pound for cats and dogs in Vila Real de Santo António, that was formerly managed by the câmara, will now be overseen by two animal protection associations – A Pata and Associação Lar dos Animais. The pound’s extensive new facilities at Rio Seco mean there is now space for 150 dogs and 35 cats. As well as being responsible for the rounding up of strays, the pound will now offer a range of additional animal care services, including emergency medical treatment for abandoned dogs and cats, temporary accommodation and adoption assistance, sterilisation and a kennel service for private dog owners.
