CHARITIES from across the Algarve were invited to submit applications to become The Resident’s Charity of the Year to help celebrate our 18th birthday on November 6. A panel of judges went through the applications and out of many deserving causes, the Alvor children’s home, Lar da Crianças Bom Samaritano, was nominated. A series of fundraising events will be held throughout this year to raise as much money as possible for this worthy charity. Until the end of the year, The Resident will be featuring the other applicants, so that our readers are aware of who is doing what for the community and hopefully offer their support.
THIS ANIMAL re-homing charity looks to find homes for the abandoned cats and dogs in their care.
But they are going through tough times, the land in which they operate from is leased and the landowner has informed them that he could no longer allow them to lease the land. This has taken place since March of this year.
The aim of the APAA is to rescue as many animals as possible by responding quickly and effectively to calls. It provides veterinary care for all animals and campaigns against the ill treatment of animals as well as raise awareness to the cause. At the moment, the APAA is looking to acquire new land in which to build a new rescue centre.
The APAA cares for 82 dogs and 24 cats at this time and is in desperate need of new space as dogs being abandoned is happening all too often. Due to a recent law passed in England requiring owners to look after their animals, the APAA is trying to get the Portuguese government to do the same but this is a more difficult task to achieve.
