Beach patrols

THE PRESIDENT of the Portuguese maritime police association has said that the number of active members on patrol is too low to maintain effective vigilance of the coastline.

According the Jorge Veloso, the patrols have been reinforced by PSP and GNR police but “this is not enough” and puts summer beach vigilance at risk.

There are currently 513 members in the maritime police, which will be reinforced with 70 more this year, but Jorge Veloso believes that a total of 1,200 are needed to fulfil demand.
