British Consul for Lisbon appointed

Alex Ellis, British Ambassador to Portugal, has agreed the appointment of the new British Consul in Lisbon, Simona Demuro.

Simona Demuro, who has worked for the British Council for 12 years, will now be responsible for the consular team in the capital and will also supervise the honorary Consulates in Porto, Funchal in Madeira and Ponta Delgada in the Azores.

Between 1998 and 2006, Simona Demuro was Examinations Manager for Portugal where she dealt with English language outreach programmes across the country. She holds an MA in English Language Teaching from the University of Edinburgh and taught English as a foreign language from 1993 to 1997 in the UK, Italy, Poland and Portugal.

Alex Ellis said of the appointment: “I am delighted that Simona is joining us to lead the Consulate in Lisbon and oversee our very busy Honorary Consular network.

“Simona’s mix of public sector and client facing experience with the British Council, alongside her many years as a resident in Lisbon, give her just the right profile to lead the Consulate in providing a consistently excellent service to British residents and visitors alike.”
