British man recovering

A 72-year-old British man, who was hospitalised following an altercation over a parking matter, is slowly recovering in Faro’s Santa Maria hospital.

It is alleged that the expatriate double-parked his car in front of the DVD store, Cinearte, in Almancil, on May 7, and on his return, he found a woman in his car trying to move it (see The Resident May 18 and 25).

An altercation is said to have ensued and a tall man in his thirties, who had approached the arguing pair, allegedly knocked the elderly man to the ground. The Briton was taken to Lisbon’s São José hospital in a coma and treated for severe head trauma.

A few weeks ago, he was taken off a life support machine after he regained consciousness and transferred to Faro’s private hospital, Santa Maria.  He is said to be recovering quicker than expected and doctors believe that he will make a full recovery but the recovery will nonetheless be slow.

Doctors also believe that, in time, he will regain his full memory and his current memory lapses are temporary.

The man is sitting up and is using a wheelchair to move around in and a family member is reported as saying he is more alert in the mornings and is currently undergoing physiotherapy.

The incident is being investigated by the police after an official complaint was lodged by the man’s family.
