CARJACKING IN Portugal has increased by 55 per cent this year, compared to last year, but there was a drop in violent car theft in June.
Statistics from the Gabinete Coordenador de Segurança (GCS), the security planning office, reveal that a total of 307 complaints were made against carjackers between January and June this year, 86 per cent of which in Lisbon, Porto and Setúbal.
The average number of cases registered per month is 51, with only 35 registered in June.
Between January and June of 2007, 198 cases of carjacking were registered.
