A Carvoeiro man, 35, died after being hit with a roadside metal post following an altercation outside Sully’s Bar, near the town’s main square, in the early hours of Thursday, December 23.
The Portuguese man, who managed a tourist boat docked in Portimão harbour, died instantly after he was attacked by a 22-year old man who lives in the nearby Poço Partido area, following an argument believed to be over a minor car crash involving their vehicles.
The attacker handed himself in to police later the same day and is being held in custody awaiting trial.
A Carvoeiro resident, who asked not to be named, told the Algarve Resident: “The town was in shock. We ask: ‘Where were the GNR when this happened?’
“The GNR station, which is located on a hill, actually overlooks the square.”
