The group captured a blue marlin weighing 419 kilos and measuring more than four metres.
The team were on board the recreation fishing boat Jocanana, from the Sesimbra Naval Club south of Lisbon, when they caught the swordfish at 4pm on Tuesday.
The team then struggled for seven hours to pull him onto the boat and only returned to shore on Wednesday at 2pm.
The previous official European record, according to the European Federation of Sea Angling (EFSA), was set in September of 2003, in Lagos in the Algarve and weighted 383.47 kilos.
