Caught out by car tax

A NEW law introduced this year enables foreign vehicle owners to purchase car tax from any finance office in Portugal.

The new car tax disc obliges all owners of foreign cars which have not been matriculated and which have been in Portugal for more than 180 days to pay Portuguese road tax.

This process requires car owners to give their names, Portuguese fiscal contribution numbers and car documents.

A spokesman at the Silves Finance office told The Resident: “Foreign car owners must supply the number plate, fuel type and year of manufacture as not all employees can read foreign documents.”

The new tax disc is given immediately for foreign cars and the application process can be carried out by anyone as long as they have the car owner’s details and fiscal contribution number.
