Cheaper calls

THE EU parliament is due to vote early next year on whether the cost of roaming charges for using mobile phones abroad should be capped, following a proposal by the EU commissioner.

Limits were imposed on the mobile phone industry’s roaming charges for voice calls in September 2007. However, the costs of sending a text message and browsing the internet while users are abroad was not affected.

The new legislation, which could come into effect next July, could see the cost of text messaging fall by up to 60 per cent.
