Child mauled by dog

A PORTUGUESE boy, aged 10, was attacked by a Pit Bull dog in Faro last Thursday and was taken to Faro hospital to be treated for injuries sustained to his left foot and right arm.

It is believed that the dog had tried to attack his neck, which could have proved fatal, but a passer-by picked up a piece of wood and used it to get the dog off the boy.

The boy told police that he saw the owner of the dog, who is believed to be a girl aged around 16, removing its leash and the dog began running towards him.

He said: “I was scared and I ran away” but the dog caught up with him. The boy tried to protect his face, using his arm to try to keep the animal away.

The passer-by saw the dog jumping up towards the boy’s neck and grabbed a piece of wood off the street, and hit the dog many times before it let go. The animal ran away but was later caught and the owners were told to keep the dog locked in the house for a period of 15 days.

The owners were also fined for not having the dog on a leash and not putting a muzzle on.

The owners have to present a report to a veterinarian, who will decide on the measures to be taken but it is not certain whether the dog will be put to sleep.
