Cinemas throughout Portugal losing customers

In these times of economic crisis, people are attending the cinemas less frequently. Between April and May, a drop of 224,000 customers was registered compared with last year.

Despite the bad news, the phenomenon of James Cameron’s Avatar seemed to contradict the emerging trend of less people attending the cinemas.

Avatar grossed almost seven million euros in Portugal and had 1.2 million viewers, making it the mostseen movie in Portugal since 2004.

The fall in cinema-goers is partly blamed on ticket prices, with people seemingly not willing to pay six euros or more to watch a movie.
