Cliffhanger

A nailbiting last home game of the season against Varzim at the weekend may have laid the foundations for bringing top class football back to Portimão for the first time in 20 years.

The Algarveans looked like having to settle for a draw after a late equaliser from the visitors left the score tied at two a piece, but as Sport TV were broadcasting 2-2 as the final result, captain Ricardo Pessoa tucked away an injury time penalty to set up a grand finale for Sunday afternoon.

Portimonense, joint top of the Liga de Honra with Beira-Mar on 51 points, travel to Oliveirense, level with Feirense on 49 points.

Depending on results at around 5.45pm – a draw will suffice for the Algarve hopefuls – any two of these four teams can claim a place in next season’s Superliga, raising the possibility of not only a top flight regional derby with Olhão but also the prospect of bringing the likes of Sporting and Benfica to the banks of the Arade.
