Closure of Silves cork factory hailed as win for local residents

“We never called for it to close, but we welcome the news,” said spokesperson for civic movement

News of the upcoming closure of the Amorim cork factory in Silves has been welcomed by residents who have long complained about smoke emissions and noise coming from the facility.

While the decision came as a surprise, locals say it ultimately works in their favour.

“Although we never called for the factory to close, we welcome the news, because it works in our favour,” said Nuno Neves, spokesperson for Neighbours of the Factory (Vizinhos da Fábrica), the group of local residents who for years have fought to put a stop to the factory’s smoke emissions.

This week, Corticeira Amorim confirmed it plans to close its factory in Silves and move its expanded cork production to Vendas Novas, citing operational efficiency and proximity to raw materials as the primary reasons.

The move is set to happen on June 9, the company revealed.

Meanwhile, Amorim confirmed that 31 employees currently working in Silves will be offered the option to relocate to Vendas Novas. A company representative acknowledged, however, that relocation may not be possible for everyone and said fair severance terms will be discussed with those who choose not to move.
