ECONOMY minister Manuel Pinho has confirmed that food products imported from China are facing additional scrutiny from the Portuguese authorities.
Milk and related products produced in China have been banned from the European Union since 2002 and the Minister ensured the public that this rule is being respected.
According to the minister, the country’s food standard agency, Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica (ASAE), was to be more vigilante about these kind of products.
The extra vigilance follows China’s milk crisis, where several babies are confirmed to have died and thousands of others hospitalised after drinking powdered milk contaminated with melamine.
