Crime in the Algarve letter 1

Dear Editor,

It is widely believed that the Algarve Resident likes to publish ‘doom and gloom’ articles about some aspects of life in the Algarve – especially matters to do with alleged crime.

With that in mind, I wonder if you sometimes fail to spot some ‘weaknesses’ in the reports you publish while you pursue ‘sensationalism’ – after all that’s what sells newspapers?

One such report by Daisy Sampson, headed “Nothing” will stop burglars is nothing short of scaremongering.

The victim who wished to remain anonymous said: “We can only assume that the burglars had been to the house the day before and opened a window slightly, to return in the night once all the lights had gone off”.

With a little forethought the reporter could have asked the victim to explain why they assumed the burglars had been to the house the day before. Who it was that was given access and/ or who it was that gave them access for them to open a window?

The comment that alarms, security grills and security lighting are effectively worthless is disingenuous as the ‘victim’ has as good as admitted that a window was left open. There is no report of any forced entry – so your condemnation of the security devices is totally unjustified. That alone will scare the living daylights out of those who have invested in such devices.

Tony Donnelly,

Praia do Carvoeiro

Editor’s note: Dear Tony, Our headline was the result of a comment made by the victim of the crime. Your assertion that we like to publish “doom and gloom” stories is your view – it is certainly not based on fact.
