Croatia clamps down on Mafia

PRIME MINISTER of Croatia, Ivo Sanader, has said he will sack his interior and justice ministers following what has been described as a mafia killing of a prominent lawyer’s daughter.

The national police chief is also to lose his job after the latest series of brutal daylight attacks in the capital, Zagreb.

Lawyer Zvonimir Hodak is currently defending an ex-general suspected of stealing five million dollars worth of diamonds used in wartime deals.  His daughter, Ivana Hodak, 26, was shot dead in a building in Zagreb on Monday morning.

This is the latest of a series of mob-style violent attacks and murders to be reported in Zagreb in recent months.

President Sanader has said: “I expect swift police action. It is high time we cracked down on the mafia.  This is a heinous crime, all the more dangerous as it happened in broad daylight.”
