A WEEKLY ferry route between Portimão, Funchal in Madeira and Las Palmas and Tenerife in the Canary Islands has been launched.

This new service, which is run by a Spanish ship company, Naviera Armas, and carries passengers as well as vehicles, departs form Portimão at midday every Sunday, arriving in Funchal around 21 hours later. After a six hour stop in Madeira, the ferry continues to the Canary Islands, where it arrives on Tuesdays.

The ferry, called Volcán de Tijarafe, is 154 metres in length and has a capacity of 1,000 passengers and 600 cars. Passengers have a range of amenities available to them during the journey, including a swimming pool, buffet service and bar, gymnasium and entertainment rooms.

Prices start at 150 euros per person plus taxes for a return journey, with transportation of a car costing an extra 100 euros. Prices for a cabin for two people cost 300 euros.
