A malicious cyber attack over Christmas forced the temporary shutdown of the Algarve Resident website earlier this week.
Mike Almond, publishing director of the Resident Group, said: “We were one of many, many websites, including others in Portugal, subjected to widespread internet hacking which began on Christmas Eve.
“Our IT consultants worked on the problem and did brilliantly to get the issue resolved within a few days.”
Unfortunately, the popular Resident Online Poll had to be suspended but it is hpped this will return by January 4.
“I can only apologise to our readers and visitors for the loss of this important information source. It is frustrating for everyone involved,” said Mike Almond.
It is believed that more than 100,000 sites have been affected by the attack, which is said to have originated in Moldova.
