Thomas Bjorn became the first Dane to take golf’s Estoril Open title at Penha Longa on Sunday afternoon.
The 39-year-old former Ryder Cup player took the lead with a second round of 65 and strolled home five shots clear of Australian runner-up Richard Green with another Dane, Mark Haastrup, coming in third.
The only Portuguese player to survive the cut, Filipe Lima, briefly flattered with three birdies but followed that feat with a triple bogey on the ninth to drop to a lowly 57th place in the final standings.
In the wake of Portugal’s ‘other’ major, golf federation President Manuel Agrellos unveiled proposals concerning a possible fusion of the Portugal Open and Portugal Masters thereby creating a single ‘super’ tournament.
