THE BODY of a young dwarf whale was found by fishermen at sea near the port of Arrifana, Aljezur on Monday.
It was towed by the fishing boat to the beach before being removed by the authorities. This specimen was 4.80 metres in length and weighed 1.5 tonnes.
Élio Vicente, a Zoomarine biologist said: “This type of dwarf whale, called Baleonoptera Acutorostrata, is very common in Portuguese waters and is a species that comes very close to the coast. This whale was probably only a few months old and either died from illness or because of a collision with a boat.”
