Death after surgery

A private cosmetic surgery clinic in Faro is under investigation after a patient died in January following a liposuction operation.

According to Lusa news agency, the Portuguese woman, 25, from Fuseta, Olhão, who went under the knife on January 12 to remove fat from her waist, began complaining of pain, dizziness and vomiting days after the procedure.

She returned to the doctor who performed the surgery, who prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and antibiotics. The patient died in the early hours of January 15. The autopsy cited the cause of death as a pulmonary thromboembolism and it also found internal second degree burns on her abdomen and waist.
