Demolition of illegal coastal buildings starts

Demolition of houses illegally built on Fuzeta Island began on April 28 as part of the Polis Litoral Ria Formosa programme for the development of the Ria Formosa area.

The work is finishing what the weather started, bringing down the houses which were affected by this winter’s storms.

Of the 77 structures in the area, only 27 survived the storms.

No owners were present during the demolition works, but the same is not expected to happen at Faro beach when work starts there as owners have already protested about the programme.

Dulce Pássaro, Minister of the Environment, said: “Obviously there will be objections but we hope that owners understand that there is no other alternative. We must proceed with the demolition plan.

“We have an action plan to carry out, which has received widespread support from professionals. The process was put to public consultation and is designed to defend the public interest and to safeguard residents from the risk that these structures present.”

The work on Fuseta Island is expected to cost an estimated 441,000 euros and is due to be completed by the end of June.

The Polis programme target area is 48 kilometres of the coastal zone and 57 kilometres of lagoon area in five counties in the Algarve – Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António – and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
