Disgraced Portimão Urbis boss back in public office

After the bombshell last summer that saw Portimão’s deputy mayor and a local councillor arrested with three others on charges of corruption, mismanagement of funds, money-laundering and criminal association, the councillor has seen his bail conditions relaxed on appeal, and is even back in public office.

Correio da Manhã reports that Jorge Campos – the former administrator at the municipal company Portimão Urbis – has “returned to work at EDP”.

A Lisbon court accepted Campos’ appeal last week and decided to “relax” bail stipulations imposed in a case that hit the headlines largely because the co-accused deputy mayor “swallowed a paper containing important evidence” after ripping it out of the hands of a policeman.

The disgraced deputy mayor, Luís Carito, remains under house arrest, but colleague Campos is now able to come and go as he pleases, and can even travel abroad if he wishes, said Correio da Manhã.

Campos has also seen the €20,000 lodged to secure his bail returned to him.
