The side of a two-storey building in Lisbon ‘gave way’ in the early hours of this morning, exposing people’s living rooms to the open air.
It won’t be difficult to understand what prompted this collapse: the next door area is a building site, with works going ahead on constructing a new property.
Lisbon City Council has stressed that it will provide accommodation for the 16 people now deprived of their homes (it is really just fortuitous that it wasn’t the bedroom walls that gave way).
Adding to the drama is the fact that one car parked outside the property has also been crushed by falling masonry.
The collapse took place at 3am (again, fortuitous, as residents were asleep, and not in their living rooms). People woken by the noise said it sounded ‘like an earthquake’.
