In an extraordinary display of civic tolerance, we hear that a “group of citizens of Portimão” is organising a farewell dinner for Manuel da Luz – the former president of Portimão Câmara, leaving the borough after 14 colourful years of service with a seemingly endless list of debt totalling over €166 million.
Even more remarkable is the fact that the group is selling tickets for this jamboree, which is due to go ahead this evening at 8.30pm at Hotel Alvor Praia, Praia dos Três Irmãos, in Alvor.
Anyone interested may still be able to book a place, at €20 per person, by calling 919 350 449 or 965 145 379.
Farewell dinners for outgoing mayors are nothing new in the Algarve, apparently. There was even a “homage dinner” in Faro recently, held in honour of outgoing Câmara president Macário Correia, whose departure from office followed numerous court cases.
