€25,000 raised in 13th Mamamaratona

Around 6,000 people took part in last Sunday’s Mamamaratona run/walk in Portimão raising a total of €25,000 for cancer care.

The initiative, organised by the Algarve Oncology Association, marked its 13th anniversary on October 13, with thousands of people turning up to show their support for this good cause. Proceeds raised on the day will be used for the construction of a residence, called Casa Flor das Dunas, for cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Faro Radiology Unit.

The riverfront area of Portimão was ‘painted’ a bright colour pink as

participants in their Mamamaratona T-shirtsgathered to walk or run in celebration of ‘Pink October’, so-called due to the various events held across the world to raise funds for cancer care.

Organisers also aimed to raise awareness among the population about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle.

A number of athletes, such as Fernanda Ribeiro, Ana Cabecinha, Ana Dias, Jorge Costa, Hely van Hulst, Carlos Cabral and Ezequiel Canário, also took part in the ‘2nd Half-Mamamaratona’.
