EDP president’s salary “obscene”, say MPs

A Socialist MP has criticised the 3.1 million euro salary that EDP President António Mexia took home last year.

PS Deputy António José Seguro said that “at a time of enormous difficulty and sacrifice for the Portuguese, it is unthinkable, obscene and immoral that an executive can be allowed to earn this kind of money”.

The former minister during the António Guterres government made his remarks on his website antoniojoseseguro.com

Former Lisbon Mayor João Soares also attacked the high salary received by Mexia, who pointed to the company’s one billion Euros revenue and success in the United States’ renewable energy market when he addressed the American Club before Easter.

“I was immensely shocked and thought that it was as scandal”, he said in an interview with national daily newspaper Correio da Manhã.

António Mexia received in 2009 a basic salary of 700,000 euros with a 600,000 euro variable salary and a multi-year bonus payout of 1.8 million euros.
