EDP upsets residents

CONSTRUCTION ON electricity company EDP’s power substation has resumed in Torre, Almancil, to the disappointment of residents who breathed a sigh of relief when work stopped last week.

They believed that their objection to the construction work was taken seriously by Loulé Câmara but construction resumed early on Monday morning (August 20).

In last week’s edition, The Resident reported that, according to residents, the substation is located in a greenbelt area and is 300 metres from the Ria Formosa nature reserve.

They are furious that the câmara did not notify them about the project or even discuss it with them. According to residents, the law states that the câmara should have called a meeting with them to discuss EDP’s plans.

They have begun contacting national and international environmental associations, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth in hopes that they can help and have also contacted the EU.

Loulé Câmara continues to decline to comment to The Resident about the substation, which according to residents is not licensed.

Residents also say that the câmara has not spoken to them for two weeks, despite several attempts to obtain information.
